Campy Umpy’s Bagels & Stuff

GOOD MORNING, CAMPERS!!! RISE & SHINE!!!

Just two weeks ago, the much anticipated Camp Umpy’s Bagels & Stuff store opened on Main Street!!

As the name insinuates, the theme inside is “camp”, from the original artwork of Jerry DeCrotie of Green Street Design Studios, to the S’mores cupcakes, to the furniture right down to the bathroom door! Walking into Camp Umpy’s is like walking into another world! Ok, maybe not another world, but definitely into something different, yet common. The creativity and uniqueness of the decor is only matched… no… surpassed, by the tastes and flavors.

Again, I mention the S’mores cupcakes.  Delicious chocolate cupcakes with a not-too-sweet marshmallow icing, topped with just enough graham cracker crumbles! Ryan Leckey loves them!!  Picture soon :)  Only ONE DOLLAR!!!

Bagels… oh yes, the bagels!!! As my friend, a former Brooklyn-ite says, “They are the closest to New York bagels you can get!”   Water boiled, seeded and baked on premises, these bagels are the best anywhere in Northeastern, PA… heck, in Pennsylvania!   You have to try them to believe it! And for only 80 cents for a bagel, why wouldn’t you?? They offer the staple flavors, plain, sesame, poppy seed, marble rye, and more!  And for the more health conscious, you can get any seeded bagel made on whole wheat bagels!  Just yesterday I had a whole wheat poppy seed bagel and it was delish!!!

Just a little preview of the onion bagels. :D

They also serve breakfast sandwiches, wraps, pastries, and bialys!

On their daily menu you can choose from “The Don” (grilled bagel with gouda,  cheddar, and fresh bacon crumbles), “The Roast Beast” (fresh roast beef, with horseradish, mayo and tomato), “Camp Club” (turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomatoa, red onion and mayo), or their signature sandwich, “The Plumpy Umpy” (ham, swiss, bacon, whole grain mustard on a toasted buttered bagel). The latter was taste tested and approved by Ryan Leckey on Camp Umpy’s Grand Opening!

When Ryan Leckey asked Cheryl Batcher,  ”What made you open a bagel shop?” and “Why Camp Umpy’s?”  Without skipping a beat, “Because he (pointing to  her father, Jack, aka Umpy) wanted a bagel.”

Alongside “Happy Camper” Cheryl, my sister, Tina, (yea.. so I am biased haha ) and her husband Corey, run the show with Umpy as their key “camp counselor”. There are a few “part-time” campers as well, serving bagels to business men and women, locals, and visitors.  In just a short time, they are turning Honesdaliens into HAPPY CAMPERS!

There is a little something for everyone at Camp Umpy’s Bagels & Stuff.

Located at 622 Main Street in Honesdale,  Campy Umpy’s is open MONDAY thru SUNDAY 6am until 2pm!  Stop in after church on Sunday, or before, during or after work during the week!  Need to call in a pick-up? 253-0333

Log onto FACEBOOK and visit them @ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Camp-Umpys-Bagels-Stuff/205071452851371?sk=wall (if this link does not work, you can search Camp Umpy’s Bagels & Stuff)   You will find daily specials here ^. :)

Don’t forget to tell them that Niki sent you!  Much love and luck to my family (blood and adopted) at Camp Umpy’s!!

Roots & Rhythm

Hi guys & dolls! Sorry that I haven’t posted about R&R before the event. I have been so wrapped up in my photography, that I kinda pushed this blog aside. However, I am going to try to concentrate at least a little time everyday on here. You all deserve to know what has been going on in Honesdale, and what there is yet to come!

Today, I will be posting a couple different short blogs to catch up. First on the block, Roots & Rhythm. I am on a different laptop so cannot load pictures from the event, but if you go to www.facebook.com/nikisnaps you can see some photos.

Started six years ago by John Rocklin, Roots & Rhythm is a free concert in Honesdale Central Park. Music, food, crafts, vendors, story time for the kids… who could ask for more?!? I am going to go into further detail about the bands that played, but I need to gather up some information first, I don’t want to misinform you.

Simply put, this is an exciting event that you should plan to attend next year! The music is amazing! The pre-party the night before is awesome, and I hear the after party is quite a hoot too!

WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS & DRIVERS

Remember the post I put up the other day? Well, the lady that I was talking about, died yesterday. She had severe head trauma, nine broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a broken femur.

We need to open our eyes to the world around us. Not just to see the beauty that lies within, but to see what is actually there! Not many people see the little old lady with a cane walking up the sidewalk, standing at the corner waiting for someone to stop so she can cross the street. Or the children riding bikes or skateboards, whizzing through an intersection.

I think that now more than ever, everyone needs to pay attention to pedestrians in or out of crosswalks, and to cars in BOTH lanes. Not only because of the weather, but because of the economy. Gas prices are high, as if you didn’t know, and more people are walking instead. I walk to work often because it is easier, cheaper, and good for me. I watch and wait until cars actually stop before I walk across. You never know for sure if they are going to stop.

Ok.. we all know the common courtesies to crossing, or letting someone cross, now, lets put that knowing to use! Be aware of your surroundings. SLOW DOWN! HANG UP THE PHONE! LOOK WHERE YOU ARE GOING! This goes for drivers and pedestrians.

Good Luck and Happy Crossing!

WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS!!!

How many signs do we have to put up? How many near misses need to be made? How many pedestrians need to get HIT???

Yesterday afternoon a female pedestrian was hit by a Ford F350 that was turning left off of 7th St to go North on Church St. She was life-flighted to CMC, and that is all I know right now.

Will this wake people up?? I know a lot of us are not happy about the one way traffic patterns… and to be honest with you… I personally think the pedestrian vs. vehicles “war” has gotten worse with it! No one pays attention to crosswalks anymore! Driving up Church St, there are at LEAST EIGHT crosswalks. I have to cross over Church and Main quite often walking up to Turkey Hill, work, the Philip Hone Gallery, and I have to say… STOP! Here are a couple “statistics” I have noticed.

1. Walking with my kids, in or out of stroller, I have less people stopping for me than if I am walking my puppy!!
2. If I am wearing my Trackside Grill hat, I have more people stopping than if I am without it!
Figure THAT out!!!

When someone in the right northbound lane stops, it is the one in the left lane that flies by anyway!!! And vice versa! People are not paying attention to the road like they should be! Too busy on the cell phones (as one girl was when she rolled through the stop sign on 11th St turning into the far lane on NB Church, almost hitting me in the process), or just NOT LOOKING!!!!

It is a SIMPLE… very very SIMPLE thing to do when you see the cars ahead of you or in the next lane slowing/stopped. SLOW DOWN AND STOP!!! You don’t know if that person is stopping for a pedestrian, another car, or to turn (because not everyone uses their blinkers), but isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?

When I drive down the road, I look at every intersection for pedestrians, or cars trying to scoot in from one of the horizontal running streets. This has kept me out of quite a few accidents. I have actually seen people that were behind me when I slowed for a pedestrian, swerve AROUND me and almost HIT the person innocently walking in the crosswalk!

WAKE UP, PEOPLE!!!! LOOK AT THE ROAD!!! PUT THE CELL PHONE DOWN!!!!

W-A-T-C-H F-O-R P-E-D-E-S-T-R-I-A-N-S
They could be someone’s mom, dad, sibling, co-worker, aunt, uncle, cousin, friend, husband, wife, child. Not to mention.. if they are shopping in Honesdale, they are paying your bills!!!

(I know that last thing seems…. trivial… but I want to wake these drivers up!)

PARENTS! Sit your driving teens down. Tell them what happened. Tell them what COULD happen. I feel sorry for whoever hit that lady yesterday, they will have to live with that guilt for their entire lives!! Teenagers need to understand the consequences of being a rude driver. A driver who doesn’t pay attention to their surroundings.

ALSO!!!! Pedestrians need to watch where they are going as well! The Pedestrian law is not as enforced as some would like to think. DO NOT pop into traffic crossing the street. USE A CROSSWALK THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE THERE FOR!!!!! If you jaywalk, you are least likely to be seen!!!!  USE COMMON SENSE!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE…. WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING! BE CONSIDERATE TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE TRYING TO CROSS THE STREET! MOST, TIMES THEY ARE HEADED TO WORK, OR TRYING TO GET TO THE STORE FOR FOOD TO FEED THEIR KIDS! OR MAYBE, JUST MAYBE THEY ARE WALKING TO THE HOSPITAL TO SAY THEIR GOOD-BYES TO A LOVED ONE!

((UPDATE)) The lady that was hit is my brother’s landlord. She is in critical condition.  As soon as I find out more information on her condition, I will be sure to let you all know.

The biggest moon

Good Morning, People of Honesdale! It is a crisp Sunday morning and I am up and ready to go! Ok.. not very ready… my throat is a little scratchy, and my lower back is stiff… but I am on the right track to get started in spite of it all!!!

Last night we had the biggest full moon since March 28th, 1992! This happens because the moon’s path around the Earth is not ROUND but more oval-like. They call it elliptical. At the point of “Perigee” the moon appears to be 14% bigger and brighter than the full moon at the “Apogee” point. Perigee is the point when the moon is closest to us, and Apogee is when it is at it’s furthest. The next, what they have dubbed a “Supermoon” will be November 14, 2016!

Hope you all had a chance to check it out.. and possibly snag a few pictures!! Here are a couple that I took.
